Look to Speak

A free Android application developed by Google Creative Lab that enables people with speech and motor impairments to communicate by selecting images or pre-written phrases using eye movements detected by the smartphone's front-facing camera. Users navigate by looking left, right, or up to select from items displayed in two columns, with a binary search narrowing choices through multiple selection steps. Despite its promise as a free, low-barrier gaze-based AAC tool, evaluations in Ghana found significant limitations including counter-intuitive interaction design, English-only speech output, culturally irrelevant default content, and high cognitive demands.
