Multilingual AAC

Also known as: Multilingual Communication Device

Augmentative and alternative communication systems designed to support communication in multiple languages, reflecting the linguistic diversity of users and their communication partners. Multilingual AAC is particularly important in the Global South, where multilingualism is common and users may need to communicate in different languages depending on context. Challenges include developing text-to-speech models for low-resource languages, creating culturally appropriate symbol sets for each language, and supporting code-switching between languages. Most mainstream AAC systems remain predominantly English-based, creating significant barriers for non-English-speaking populations.
