Low-Tech AAC

Also known as: No-Tech AAC, Unaided AAC

Augmentative and alternative communication methods that require no or minimal technology, including communication boards, picture cards, letter boards, eye-pointing frames, sign language, and gestures. Low-tech AAC is often more immediately accessible, sustainable, and affordable than high-tech alternatives, making it particularly relevant in low-resource settings where electronic devices may be unreliable or unavailable. Research in Ghana found that for some users, low-tech approaches such as direct access touch-based communication boards would have been more appropriate than the gaze-based smartphone application being evaluated.
