SMART Matrix

Also known as: Systems-Market Framework

A framework for understanding assistive technology ecosystems developed by MacLachlan et al. that analyzes AT provision at three levels: micro (individual user — matching products to needs), meso (service provider — availability of assessment, training, maintenance services), and macro (national/international — procurement policies, funding, innovation). The SMART matrix helps identify where systemic failures prevent AT from reaching those who need it. Applied to Ghana, the framework reveals that gaze-based AAC faces barriers at all levels: individual mismatch between technology and needs, limited SLT training and seating services at the meso level, and absent national AT procurement policies at the macro level.
