Inclusive Education

Also known as: Inclusive Schooling, Mainstreaming

An educational approach where students with disabilities learn alongside their non-disabled peers in mainstream classrooms, with appropriate supports, accommodations, and modifications to curriculum and instruction. Inclusive education contrasts with segregated schooling in separate special schools. In the Global North, inclusive education is increasingly the norm, with children with vision impairments typically supported by sighted specialist teachers in mainstream schools. In the Global South, particularly India, many children with vision impairments still attend segregated residential schools, though policy frameworks like the Right to Education Act aim to promote inclusion.
