Segregated Education
Also known as: Separate Schooling, Special Schooling
An educational model where students with disabilities are educated in separate institutions or classrooms apart from their non-disabled peers. While segregated schools like residential schools for the blind can provide specialized instruction and peer support from other students with similar disabilities, they may also limit social integration, access to mainstream curriculum breadth, and exposure to diverse peers. The disability rights movement generally advocates for inclusive education, though the transition from segregated to inclusive models remains incomplete globally, particularly in the Global South where special schools may be the only available option.
