Tactile Learning Material
Also known as: Tactile Teaching Aid, Hands-On Learning Material
Physical educational materials designed to be explored through touch, enabling students with vision impairments to understand concepts that are typically presented visually. Tactile learning materials include raised-line diagrams, 3D models, textured maps, manipulable math tools, and adapted science kits. NGOs like Vision Empower have developed tactile STEM materials (including accessible snake-and-ladder boards for teaching mathematics) that teachers describe as transformative. However, availability of tactile materials varies widely — some schools have none, while others have received them through NGO programs. The scarcity of tactile materials is a major barrier to STEM education for children with vision impairments.
