Right to Education
Also known as: RTE, Right to Education Act
Legal frameworks guaranteeing the right to free and compulsory education for all children, including children with disabilities. India's Right to Education Act (2009) mandates free education for all children aged 6-14 and includes a controversial "no detention" policy requiring automatic promotion to the next grade regardless of academic performance. While intended to reduce dropout rates, this policy has unintended consequences for schools for the blind: students are promoted without mastering Braille literacy or grade-level content, creating multi-level classrooms where teachers must simultaneously teach foundational skills and grade-appropriate curriculum.
