Macular Degeneration
Also known as: AMD, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, ARMD
A progressive eye condition that damages the macula — the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision — leading to loss of central vision while peripheral vision typically remains intact. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people over 50 in developed countries. People with macular degeneration often develop eccentric viewing strategies using a preferred retinal locus to compensate for central scotomas. Low-vision rehabilitation helps individuals optimize remaining vision for daily activities.
