Stargardt Disease
Also known as: Stargardt Macular Dystrophy, Juvenile Macular Degeneration
An inherited eye disease that causes progressive damage to the macula, leading to central vision loss typically beginning in childhood or adolescence. Stargardt disease is the most common form of inherited macular degeneration. It may also affect color vision. Unlike age-related macular degeneration, Stargardt disease affects younger people and progresses over years to decades. People with Stargardt disease retain peripheral vision and can benefit from low-vision rehabilitation strategies including eccentric viewing and magnification.
