Chronic Illness
Also known as: Chronic Condition, Long-Term Illness
Health conditions that persist for an extended period, typically more than three months, and may require ongoing management but do not necessarily have a cure. Examples include diabetes, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and chronic fatigue syndrome. People with chronic illnesses are often underrepresented in accessibility research, partly because their conditions may fluctuate, making participation unpredictable, and partly because chronic illness is not always recognized as a disability. Research has highlighted that HCI accessibility practices with chronically ill people require specific considerations around variable capacity and energy management.
