Off-the-Shelf Technology

Also known as: OTS, Commercial Off-the-Shelf, COTS

Commercially available products designed for the general consumer market without customization for specific user groups. In accessibility research, off-the-shelf technology refers to mainstream devices like smart speakers, thermostats, and lighting systems that were not designed specifically for disabled users but may be adopted and adapted for accessibility purposes. While OTS products are more affordable and widely available than specialized assistive technology, they often lack disability-specific features and require workarounds.
