Communication Access Realtime Translation

Also known as: CART, Realtime Captioning, Stenographic Captioning

A captioning service where a trained professional uses a stenographic keyboard to transcribe spoken language into text in real time, producing near-verbatim captions. CART provides the highest accuracy among live captioning methods and includes speaker identification, tone of voice cues, and contextual sounds. It is widely used as an accommodation in education, healthcare, legal, and professional settings for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, though performance can degrade with technical jargon, rapid speech, or noisy environments.
