Tacton
Also known as: Tactile Icon, Vibrotactile Pattern
A structured and abstract vibrotactile message designed to communicate complex information to users non-visually, analogous to how icons communicate information visually or earcons communicate through audio. Tactons encode information through vibration parameters such as rhythm, frequency, amplitude, duration, body location, and spatial patterns. They can convey various types of information including directions, status indicators, categories, and interface states. Research has shown that users can learn to identify multiple Tactons with high accuracy, making them a viable alternative to auditory feedback for blind and visually impaired users.
