Design Fixation
Also known as: Fixation Effect
A cognitive phenomenon in the design process where exposure to existing examples or initial solutions constrains creative thinking, causing designers to replicate or only minimally modify those examples rather than exploring original alternatives. In AI-assisted design, fixation is a particular concern because generative AI outputs can anchor designers to the styles, forms, and conventions present in the AI training data, potentially limiting innovation. Researchers recommend mitigating design fixation by using abstract or low-fidelity AI outputs during early ideation and incorporating reflective prompts that encourage designers to explore beyond their initial concepts.
