Paralinguistic Features

Also known as: Prosodic Cues, Non-Verbal Speech Features

Aspects of spoken communication that convey meaning beyond the literal words, including pitch, loudness, rhythm, tone, and emotional affect. These features are critical for understanding speaker intent, sarcasm, emphasis, and emotional state but are typically lost in standard text-based captions. For accessibility, representing paralinguistic features visually—through typography, color, or animation—can significantly improve d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing users' comprehension of media content.
