Mixed-Hearing Environment

Also known as: Mixed-Ability Hearing Space, Mixed-Hearing Performance Space

A setting in which people with varying levels of hearing ability—including Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and hearing individuals—participate together in shared activities such as music performance, collaboration, or learning. Mixed-hearing environments present unique challenges including misaligned expectations about musical norms, communication barriers between signing and speaking participants, and technology setups optimized for hearing users. Designing inclusive mixed-hearing spaces requires multimodal communication channels, assistive technologies that serve all participants regardless of hearing status, and cultural attunement to Deaf perspectives and practices.
