Accessible VR Gaming
Also known as: Accessible Virtual Reality Games, Inclusive VR Gaming
The design and development of virtual reality games and experiences that can be independently played and enjoyed by people with disabilities, including those who are blind or have low vision, deaf or hard of hearing, or have motor impairments. Accessible VR gaming requires replacing visual dependency with multimodal feedback systems (spatial audio, haptics, high-contrast visuals), providing non-visual navigation and menu systems, ensuring physical safety through boundary management, and supporting autonomous play without sighted assistance. Current consumer VR hardware presents significant accessibility barriers, including lack of native screen reader support and limited APIs for non-visual setup customization.
