Interdependence Framework
Also known as: Interdependence in Assistive Technology
A theoretical framework in assistive technology design that challenges the traditional emphasis on individual independence as the primary goal of accessibility. The Interdependence Framework, introduced by Bennett et al., positions assistive technologies as emerging from mutual support among users rather than as tools for achieving self-sufficiency. It recognises that people with disabilities often achieve their goals through collaborative relationships where different individuals contribute complementary abilities. This framework encourages designers to support and strengthen these collaborative relationships rather than attempting to eliminate the need for human assistance, embracing interconnected dimensions of independence, dependence, and interdependence.
