Neurotypical Masking

Also known as: Masking, Social Camouflaging

The practice of neurodivergent individuals consciously or unconsciously suppressing their natural behaviours and adapting their communication style to conform to neurotypical social expectations. In accessibility contexts, some neurodivergent people use AI chatbots to help with masking by having the chatbot rewrite their messages in more "diplomatic" or professionally appropriate tones, translate their thoughts into neurotypical communication patterns, or navigate social interactions they find challenging. While this can reduce social barriers, it raises questions about whether technology should help people mask or instead support acceptance of neurodivergent communication styles.
