Touch Target Size

Also known as: Tap Target Size, Target Size

The physical area of an interactive element on a touchscreen that responds to user input. Adequate touch target sizing is critical for accessibility, particularly for users with motor impairments who may have difficulty precisely tapping small areas. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.5.8 (Level AA) requires a minimum target size of 24x24 CSS pixels, while the AAA-level criterion 2.5.5 specifies 44x44 CSS pixels. Android and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines both recommend minimum touch targets of 44x44 to 48x48 pixels. Touch targets that are too small or placed too closely together are among the most common mobile accessibility violations, creating significant barriers for users with tremors, limited dexterity, or other motor impairments.
