Video Remote Interpreting

Also known as: VRI

A fee-based service that provides sign language interpretation via video conferencing technology, where the interpreter is located remotely rather than physically present with the deaf and hearing participants. VRI is commonly used when two of the three parties (the deaf person, the hearing person, and the interpreter) are in the same physical space. It is frequently employed in healthcare, workplace meetings, and other settings where in-person interpreters are unavailable or impractical to arrange on short notice. While VRI offers flexibility and prompt availability, interpreters face challenges including limited visibility of the deaf client's environment, reduced access to contextual and nonverbal cues, and constraints imposed by narrow camera fields of view on traditional platforms.
