Remote Interpretation
Also known as: Remote Sign Language Interpreting, Distance Interpreting
The provision of sign language or spoken language interpretation services through technology platforms that use live video streaming, allowing the interpreter to work from a different location than the participants. Remote interpretation encompasses both video remote interpreting (VRI) and video relay service (VRS), and has become increasingly prevalent since the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of remote work and videoconferencing. While remote interpretation offers advantages in scheduling flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and availability, it presents challenges related to reduced environmental awareness, interpreter fatigue from screen-based work, limited access to nonverbal cues, and the technical constraints of camera systems that may restrict the interpreter's view of the signing space and meeting environment.
