In the context of sign language technology, vocabulary size is a critical constraint that determines a system's practical utility — current AI-powered sign language recognition systems typically support vocabularies ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand signs, well below the estimated 10,000+ signs in everyday ASL use. For sign language learners, vocabulary acquisition follows developmental stages similar to spoken language learning, with core vocabulary (high-frequency signs) typically taught before specialized or domain-specific signs.
