Immersive Reader

Also known as: Reading Mode, Reader View

A built-in feature in web browsers, learning management systems, and productivity applications (such as Microsoft Immersive Reader) that simplifies the visual presentation of content by stripping away page clutter and presenting text in a clean, customizable format with options for font size, spacing, text-to-speech, and line focus. While immersive readers are often promoted as digital accessibility tools for people with low vision or reading disabilities, they have significant limitations compared to full screen readers: they only read embedded page content, lack advanced navigation features like heading jumps and landmark navigation, and cannot interact with form elements or dynamic content. Non-screen-reader users often mistakenly equate immersive readers with screen readers, leading to false assumptions about the accessibility of digital content.
