Task Switching

Also known as: Context Switching, Task-Switching Cost

The cognitive process of shifting attention from one task to another, which incurs a measurable performance cost in terms of time, accuracy, and mental effort. For individuals with ADHD and other conditions affecting executive function, task switching is particularly challenging because it requires inhibiting the current task set, loading the new task's rules and goals into working memory, and re-engaging attention. In digital environments, frequent task switching between browser tabs, applications, and notifications can severely fragment attention and reduce productivity. Accessibility tools that minimize unnecessary task switching — such as context-aware interfaces that show only relevant information for the current task — can significantly improve the digital experience for people with attention-related disabilities.
