Game Captioning

Also known as: Video Game Captions, Gaming Subtitles, In-Game Captions

The practice of displaying text representations of dialogue, sound effects, and other audio content within video games for deaf and hard-of-hearing players. Game captioning differs from film or television captioning because games are interactive rather than passive — players must read captions while simultaneously controlling gameplay, making readability during fast-paced action critical. Key design considerations include text contrast style (semi-transparent or black box backgrounds), font choice (bold sans serif at large sizes), caption length (single-line preferred), character identification (combining speaker names with colours), and caption colour (white for maximum contrast). Unlike film and television, there are currently no universally accepted captioning standards for video games, though research consistently shows that 83% of d/Deaf players want standardised guidelines. Effective game captions must balance conspicuousness with unobtrusiveness — clearly readable without distracting from gameplay.
