Physical Accessibility

Also known as: Physical Access, Architectural Accessibility

Physical accessibility refers to the design of buildings, environments, and public spaces so they can be independently used by people with physical disabilities, including those who use mobility aids. It encompasses features such as ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms, widened doorways, tactile ground surface indicators, and clear wayfinding signage. Physical accessibility is both a civil rights issue and a cornerstone of universal design, recognized by the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as essential for equal participation in society. Beyond regulatory compliance, truly accessible physical environments empower people with diverse abilities to navigate, interact, and participate fully in community life.
