Shorelining
Also known as: Trailing
An orientation and mobility technique in which a person with a visual impairment follows a consistent surface edge — such as a wall, curb, edge of a sidewalk, or other contrasting surface — to maintain a specific orientation and navigate through an environment. The technique involves arcing the long cane either by constant contact or two-point touch to detect the boundary while walking alongside it. Shorelining provides a reliable reference line for navigation, particularly useful in unfamiliar environments, crowded spaces, or areas without other orientation cues.
