Smart Cane

Also known as: Electronic Cane, Intelligent Cane

An enhanced version of the traditional white cane that incorporates electronic sensors — typically ultrasonic or infrared — to detect obstacles beyond the range of physical contact, providing haptic or auditory feedback to the user. Smart canes can detect obstacles at waist or head height that a standard cane would miss, and some models include GPS navigation features. While promising, adoption barriers include cost, battery life concerns, continuous buzzing in crowded environments, and the added weight and complexity compared to a standard long cane. Government programs in some countries, such as India's Assistance to Disabled Persons (ADIP) scheme, have begun subsidizing smart cane procurement.
