Independent Living

Also known as: Autonomous Living

A philosophy and practical goal emphasizing that people with disabilities should have the same opportunities and control over their daily lives as people without disabilities, including making choices about where and how they live. In accessibility practice, independent living encompasses the ability to perform daily activities with minimal support, manage personal affairs, and participate fully in community life. For people with cognitive disabilities, independent living may involve assistive devices, prompting systems, and caregiver support structures that enable autonomy while respecting individual abilities and preferences. The independent living movement has been a driving force behind disability rights legislation and the development of community-based support services.
