Nomadic Text Entry
Also known as: Mobile Text Entry, On-the-Go Texting
The practice of inputting text on a mobile device while moving through or actively engaging with the physical environment, as opposed to typing while stationary. For people who are blind or visually impaired, nomadic text entry presents unique challenges because it requires splitting attention between navigation (detecting obstacles, following routes, managing assistive technologies like white canes or guide dogs) and communication (composing messages via screen readers, speech input, or screenless typing methods). Research has identified safety risks, app-switching difficulties, and reduced situational awareness as key barriers, prompting design explorations of integrated environmental feedback within messaging applications.
