Grab Bar

Also known as: Safety Rail, Support Bar, Handrail

A rigid, wall-mounted bar designed to provide support and stability for people who need assistance maintaining balance, transferring between positions, or preventing falls. Grab bars are most commonly installed near toilets, bathtubs, and showers, but may also be placed in hallways, stairways, and other areas where support is needed. They are a critical assistive device for wheelchair users transferring to and from their chairs, older adults at risk of falls, and anyone with mobility or balance impairments. The ADA Standards for Accessible Design specify requirements for grab bar placement, height, diameter, and weight-bearing capacity in public and commercial facilities.
