Home Accessibility Audit
Also known as: Home Safety Assessment, Indoor Accessibility Assessment, HSSAT
A systematic evaluation of a residential space to identify barriers to access, safety hazards, and opportunities for modification to support people with disabilities, older adults, or families with young children. Audits typically use standardized checklists — such as the Home Safety Self-Assessment Tool (HSSAT) — covering areas like kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and entrances, and assess issues including doorway widths, floor surfaces, switch and outlet heights, grab bar availability, and presence of hazards like throw rugs. Traditional audits are conducted manually by occupational therapists or trained professionals, though emerging technologies using LiDAR, augmented reality, and computer vision are beginning to automate parts of this process.
