Sound Recognition
Also known as: Sound Classification, Audio Event Detection, Environmental Sound Recognition
Technology that automatically identifies and classifies sounds in a user's environment, typically using machine learning models trained on audio datasets. In accessibility contexts, sound recognition systems help deaf and hard of hearing people become aware of environmental sounds they cannot hear, such as fire alarms, door knocks, doorbells, microwave beeps, and speech. These systems can run on smartphones, smartwatches, or smart home devices, providing visual or haptic notifications when specific sounds are detected. A key challenge is that pre-trained models often perform poorly in real-world environments because sounds vary significantly across locations and contexts, leading to research on personalized and adaptive approaches.
