Microsoft Soundscape
Also known as: Soundscape
Microsoft Soundscape was an accessible navigation app developed by Microsoft Research that used spatialized 3D audio to help blind and low-vision users build awareness of their surroundings. Rather than providing turn-by-turn directions, Soundscape placed virtual audio beacons at destinations and points of interest, allowing users to hear the direction of their goal through bone conduction headphones while remaining aware of ambient sounds. The app was notable for its "exploration-first" design philosophy that supported independent wayfinding rather than prescriptive routing. Microsoft discontinued Soundscape in 2023 but released the code as open source, and it remains influential as a model for spatial audio-based accessible navigation.
