Kinesthetic Awareness
Also known as: Kinesthesia, Movement Awareness
The conscious perception of body position, movement, and muscle tension derived from internal sensory receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints. For sighted people, kinesthetic awareness is reinforced by visual feedback — watching their own movements and observing others. People who are blind or have low vision, especially those congenitally blind, may have reduced kinesthetic awareness because they have never visually observed body movements, making it more challenging to learn physical activities like dance, sports, and exercise. Developing kinesthetic awareness is a key goal in body movement education for BLV people.
