Body Awareness
Also known as: Body Schema, Body Image
The understanding of one's own body including its structure, posture, position in space, and relationship to the environment. Body awareness encompasses both the physical sense of where body parts are (proprioception) and the cognitive understanding of body shape, proportions, and movement capabilities. People who are congenitally blind may develop different body awareness compared to sighted individuals, as they lack the visual feedback of watching their own and others' bodies. This can affect posture, gait, and the ability to learn new physical movements, making body awareness a foundational concern in body movement education for blind and low vision people.
