Phonophobia
Also known as: Sound Phobia, Ligyrophobia
Phonophobia is an intense fear or aversion to specific sounds or loud noises that goes beyond simple discomfort, often leading to avoidance behaviors such as fleeing from environments where triggering sounds may occur. Unlike hyperacusis (heightened sensitivity to sound volume) or misophonia (strong emotional reactions to specific sounds), phonophobia is characterized primarily by anxiety and fear responses. It is commonly experienced by autistic individuals as part of broader sensory processing differences, and can significantly limit participation in everyday activities such as attending school, working in offices, or visiting public spaces.
