Sensory Processing Disorder

Also known as: SPD, Sensory Integration Disorder, Sensory Integration Dysfunction

A condition in which the brain has difficulty receiving, organizing, and responding to sensory information from the environment and the body. People with Sensory Processing Disorder may be oversensitive or undersensitive to sensory input — including touch, sound, light, movement, and proprioception — or may have difficulty integrating information from multiple senses simultaneously. SPD can affect motor coordination, emotional regulation, attention, and daily functioning. While not currently recognized as a standalone diagnosis in the DSM-5, it is widely acknowledged in occupational therapy practice and frequently co-occurs with autism, ADHD, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. SPD encompasses several subtypes, including Sensory Based Motor Disorder.
