Sensory Based Motor Disorder
Also known as: SBMD
A subtype of Sensory Processing Disorder in which the brain has difficulty using sensory information to plan and execute motor actions. SBMD encompasses two sub-types: postural disorder, which affects balance and core stability, and dyspraxia, which impacts motor planning and sequencing of movements. People with SBMD receive sensory information from their visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems without issue, but their brains process and integrate this information differently, leading to difficulties with coordination, balance, and movement planning. Symptoms are present in approximately 16% of the population and frequently co-occur with ADHD and autism. Physical therapy through play-based approaches, including circus arts, has shown benefits for developing the balance, strength, and coordination skills affected by SBMD.
