Sign Language

A visual-gestural language system that uses hand shapes, movements, body language, and facial expressions to convey meaning. Sign languages are complete, natural languages with their own grammar and vocabulary and are not visual representations of spoken languages. There are over 200 sign languages worldwide, including American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), and Indian Sign Language (ISL), each with distinct linguistic structures. Sign language is the primary mode of communication for many Deaf communities and is a core part of Deaf cultural identity. In digital contexts, supporting sign language requires adequate video quality, frame rates, and visual layout flexibility so that signers and interpreters remain clearly visible.
