Indian Sign Language
Also known as: ISL, Indo-Pakistani Sign Language, IPSL
The sign language used predominantly by the Deaf community in India. Indian Sign Language has its own distinct grammar and vocabulary that differs substantially from American Sign Language (ASL) and other sign languages. ISL is used by millions of Deaf individuals across India and is recognized as a legitimate language, though it has historically received less research attention and standardization effort compared to ASL or BSL. The linguistic diversity of ISL, combined with regional variations across India, presents unique challenges for interpreter training, technology development, and accessibility research.
