Environmental Awareness

The perception and understanding of what is happening in one's physical surroundings, particularly through auditory cues. For Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, environmental awareness is often reduced because many everyday signals — appliance timers, doorbells, approaching vehicles, conversations in adjacent rooms — rely on sound. Assistive technologies such as sound recognition apps, vibrating alert systems, and visual notification devices aim to bridge this gap by translating auditory environmental information into visual or tactile feedback. Maintaining environmental awareness is important for both safety (detecting fire alarms, traffic) and daily functioning (knowing when a washing machine finishes, when someone knocks on the door).
