Accessible Photography

Also known as: Blind Photography, Inclusive Photography

The practice and technology of enabling people with visual impairments to take, manage, browse, and share photographs. People who are blind or have low vision face challenges at every stage of photography: aiming the camera at a target, composing the frame, reviewing the result, and organizing photo collections. Assistive approaches include real-time audio or haptic feedback to guide camera aiming (e.g., EasySnap, BlindCamera), omnidirectional capture with post-production cropping (e.g., VisPhoto), audio annotations paired with photos for later recall, and AI-generated image descriptions for browsing. Photography serves important social functions for people with visual impairments, including recording memories, sharing experiences on social media, and creative self-expression.
