Slide Accessibility
Also known as: Presentation Accessibility, Accessible Presentations, Accessible Slides
The practice of designing and delivering slide presentations so they can be fully accessed and understood by people with disabilities, particularly screen reader users. Key requirements include setting proper reading orders for slide elements, providing alt-text for images and graphics, ensuring sufficient color contrast, using built-in slide layouts rather than floating text boxes, and adding meaningful titles to each slide. During live presentations, accessibility also depends on presenter behavior such as verbally describing visual content, providing slide files in advance, and using platform features like PowerPoint Live that allow direct screen reader access. Studies have found that most presenters do not follow accessibility guidelines, and that even when accessible files are available, the tools for accessing them during live screen-shared presentations are often too cumbersome for practical use.
