Glasgow Coma Scale
Also known as: GCS
A standardized neurological assessment scale used to evaluate the severity of brain injuries by measuring three aspects of responsiveness: eye opening (1-4 points), verbal response (1-5 points), and motor response (1-6 points), yielding a total score from 3 to 15. A GCS score of 13-15 indicates mild traumatic brain injury, 9-12 indicates moderate TBI, and 3-8 indicates severe TBI. The GCS is widely used in emergency medicine and rehabilitation to classify injury severity and guide treatment decisions, and it helps predict long-term outcomes including the likelihood and extent of cognitive, communication, and functional impairments that may require assistive technology support.
