Curator
Also known as: Museum Curator, Exhibition Curator, Art Curator
A professional responsible for the selection, arrangement, interpretation, and presentation of works in museums, galleries, and exhibitions. The curatorial role has expanded from its original function of preservation and management to encompass audience research, technology integration, and accessibility planning. In the context of accessibility, curators play a critical gatekeeping role: they coordinate with artists, technicians, disability organizations, and institutional management to determine whether and how assistive technologies are incorporated into exhibitions. Curators face unique challenges in making exhibitions accessible to people with disabilities, including limited knowledge of assistive technologies, insufficient policy guidance, difficulty balancing the needs of diverse visitor groups, and a vicious cycle where low attendance by visitors with disabilities reduces motivation to invest in accessibility.
