Drop Foot

Also known as: Foot Drop, Peroneal Nerve Palsy

A condition characterized by difficulty lifting the front part of the foot, causing the toes to drag along the ground during walking. Drop foot is not a disease itself but a symptom of an underlying neurological, muscular, or anatomical problem, commonly caused by nerve injury (peroneal nerve), stroke, multiple sclerosis, or spinal conditions. People with drop foot often compensate by lifting their knee higher than normal or swinging their leg outward. Treatment typically includes ankle foot orthoses, physical therapy, and in some cases electrical nerve stimulation or surgery.
