Developmental Learning Disorder
Also known as: DLD, Specific Learning Disorder, Learning Disability
A group of neurodevelopmental conditions that affect the acquisition and use of specific academic skills such as reading, writing, or mathematics. Developmental Learning Disorders include dyslexia (affecting reading), dysgraphia (affecting writing), and dyscalculia (affecting mathematics), and they frequently co-occur. These conditions are not caused by intellectual disability, sensory impairment, or inadequate instruction, but rather by differences in how the brain processes information. In digital accessibility, DLDs are important because they affect how people interact with text and numerical content, necessitating accommodations such as text-to-speech, adjustable formatting, and alternative representations of complex content.
